Zillow API (Alpha): It’s Alive

I received an invitation to join the Zillow API Network on Monday as an “Alpha” tester, but didn’t get a chance to begin work on anything until yesterday. Since then, I’ve assembled a small “toolkit” using nothing but the finest in Java open source to make integrating Zillow’s API easier. After getting past two roadblocks late this afternoon, I was able to successfully request my home’s property details and Zestimate via Zillow’s API. Woohoo! Anyone else working on integration with Zillow’s API?

What will this mean to individuals trying to sell their home, and what will it mean to realtors? Some realtors have told me that Zillow is trying to phase out the MLS. How will the API affect the overall market of real estate? Will it help me as a FSBO to sell my home? I am not sure I understand all Zillow is trying to accomplish.

I doubt individual homeowners will benefit directly. However, websites who serve homeowners and utilize Zillow’s API will in theory add more value for visitors. For example, RealtyBaron.com is integrating Zillow data to make signing up for a listing auction easier and faster.

Greg from Zillow here…I agree with Marc that the Zillow information can only serve to benefit the Real Estate community. We have no intentions of phasing out anyone or any organization, but rather intend to provide buyers, sellers, agents and anyone involved in Real Estate with as much information as possible to make educated decisions. FSBO sellers will benefit from the ability to guage market values in the area and the value of the specific house for sale. The API is just a means of providing our technology to new audiences by partnering with different organizations (like RealtyBaron).

Hope that (albeit Zillow-biased) comment was helpful.
